When selecting the right trolling motor for your new boat or boat upgrade, thrust is one of the most critical specs to consider to ensure that you can propel your boat properly. The proper thrust levels are typically calculated based on your boat’s weight and length.

What is Trolling Motor Thrust?  Thrust is measured in pounds (lbs) and refers to how powerful the trolling motor is.


How to choose the right trolling motor thrust for your boat?



Weight: The most important thing to consider when choosing trolling motor thrust.

  • The general rule of thumb is that you need at least 2 lbs. of thrust for every 100 lbs. of fully-loaded boat weight (fuel, gear, people included)
  • Example: 2,000lb boat = (2,000lb / 100) x 2 = 40lbs of thrust (minimum)
  • When it comes to trolling motor thrust, it's better to have more power than not enough.

Voltage: Indicates how much battery power your trolling motor requires. You’ll need 1 battery for every 12 volts in your trolling system – higher voltage means more thrust or power.

  • 55lbs of thrust or less = 12 volts (one battery)
  • 68-80lbs of thrust = 24 volts (two batteries)
  • 101-112lbs of thrust = 36 volts (three batteries)

Battery storage space: Consider the amount of storage in your bilge for the trolling system chosen. If you want a 112lb thrust system, you will need space for 3 batteries (36 volt system)


Fishing Considerations: If wind or current are major factors where you fish, you’ll want a little extra thrust. You will not be disappointed if you have more thrust than needed, but lack of power can be a detriment to your experience on the water.

  • Also consider that thrust does not mean speed, but more so strength or torque
  • When in the most extreme offshore conditions, Minn Kota’s Spot-Lock GPS anchor may perform better than straight-line, up current navigation
